James Dickson Carr Library Honors First African-American Graduate of Rutgers College; Previously Known as Kilmer Library The undergraduate and business library on Rutgers University's Livingston campus was renamed for James Dickson Carr, the first African-American graduate of Rutgers College, on February 8, 2017.

First attending Rutgers Grammar School in 1886, he entered the college in 1888, where he was an outstanding student. Later he went on to receive a LL.D from Columbia Law School. The Kilmer Area Library on Livingston Campus will be named for James Dickson Carr, Rutgers’ first African American graduate who completed his degree in 1892, was a member of the Phi Beta Kappa honor society, and went on to attend Columbia Law School.
